About
What you’ll find in the about section is a definition of a probabilist, what this site is and provides, why I created it and who I am. Even though it’s written as if there already were tens or hundreds of posts available, it is done so that you better apprehend what to expect and so that I am better focused on delivering exactly that.
Definition
Webster defines a probabilist as: One who maintains that certainty is impossible, and that probability alone is to govern our faith and actions. I imagine your first thought on this definition is: “What a geeky life philosophy!” Therefore, I’d like to take that definition a bit further and explain why there’s a probabilist inside each of us.
We all make choices based on probabilities both on a conscious and an unconscious level. You might choose not to go sailing due to the rainy weather forecast for the weekend. You might choose to eat fish once a week because a scientific article convinced you that it’s a healthy choice. You might choose to study extensively to get a PhD to improve your chances on getting a more satisfying and higher paying job. Or you might choose not to read any further because all this in its incomprehensibility or inconsistency sounds to you like a load of bull. Nevertheless, these conscious and unconscious choices depend on your personality, interests, preferences, background, surroundings and reality, to name a few. While these examples are more hands-on, a lot of information will focus on intangible aspects such as personal development. Probabilism in my tongue and mind means how you face and make your choices and if taken further, structure your reality and conceptions.
The good thing about all this is that you can constantly change the way you think, act, respond, decide, learn and behave - to your advantage and the people you care about. This is where the website you’re currently visiting comes along. It does just that. All of the examples above have different impacts depending on your personal context. This site is meant to present new contexts for the sake of realizing that they exist and why. Whether one reality or context is better than another is your choice. And since you undoubtedly expected this page to contain a description and purpose of the website as well, here you go.
TheProbabilist.com
This site, in all its technicalities is a blog. However, I want you to regard it as a database. Time and effort was put into the accessibility of information and that is why you have numerous ways of searching through the ever growing database to find posts particularly fitting your needs, abilities, desires and purpose. You can browse the material alphabetically, chronologically, by category, rating, color/post type, month and search box. And this is all free of charge, no strings attached. What is the purpose of all this?
Let’s look at the mission statements of this website: Invaluating Reality to Your Advantage. Ok, so the word invaluate doesn’t actually exist in any dictionaries. I had to create it. Basically it’s a verbalized form of the adjective invaluable - and if it happens to appear in a dictionary someday, its definition would be: To add value (beyond estimation) upon something. In this case, upon your individual reality. Briefly put, this site’s mission is to provide you with information that genuinely enlightens and expands your reality in order to create value as well as discover and optimize your specific purpose in life, whatever it may be. It is meant to open your mind, tickle your brain, leave food for thought, challenge your perceived certainties and make the impossible or unthinkable - plausible.
The more recent mission statement: Improving Your Odds in Life, was added since it accounts for this blog’s purpose in a more comprehensive way for new visitors. And it at least somehow links probability calculus with personal development.
Why is this done through a website then? The main reason is definitely the magnitude and diversity of the audience. I don’t have to choose my readers, they choose me if they want to. Making phone calls and statistically getting a small percentage to listen and actually get interested in what you have to offer can be frustrating and most certainly time consuming. Add to that the request of getting paid for what you offer and you need a lot of resources, knowledge and value to provide - to actually make a profit.
Then there’s the question of time management. I can write my posts whenever I want to and you can access them whenever you want to. It’s never been easier to both provide and receive. However, this holds true to both productive and destructive information worldwide. The fact that you’re reading this proves that you seek the former knowledge and therefore, I sincerely welcome you and express my gratitude to you for visiting my website and for personally invaluating what I write and present.
What’s in it for me?
Since I believe in the law of reciprocity - and have needs and purposes of my own, it’s more than fair that those who want to see the other side of the coin are allowed to. While it’s perfectly understandable if this is of no interest to you, it will reflect the many reasons that caused me to start out and take on this project. Hopefully it will ignite a similar drive and awareness in you to create something that fits and fulfills your specific purposes. That being said, this topic can also be of value to you.
Invaluating my own reality is the primary objective. By constantly reading, learning, improving, questioning and seeking new knowledge, I force myself to attain higher levels of wisdom and consciousness. Having more and more readers from various parts of the world suggest increasingly interesting subjects for me to write about accelerates the process even further. In this sense, the cycle of this ‘new understanding distribution system’ truly benefits all parties involved. I’m basically expanding your and my own knowledge networks consisting of both people and people made sources.
Another significant aspect of invaluating my reality is to eventually discover a perfectly aligned and fitting purpose in my life. While the domain currently encompasses a large amount of very different categories, time will show which ones truly inspire me to passionately and courageously develop through my entire course of life. Therefore, while the paths are multiple at this point, I expect each path’s impact and significance to reveal itself for me personally in time.
This web log database stores my thoughts for later access to recall or update. I’d like to imagine that at some point during this process the quantity of what I tangibly display black on white surpasses my conscious memory of what I’ve written and thought. Accordingly, the quality improvement process that I demand myself every time I write can easily be subjectively measured when a notable amount of time has passed.
I had to start my entrepreneurial venture somehow, somewhere. Running your own website today is easy and cheap. With a risk/reward ratio this great I just couldn’t pass on this opportunity. And the more I thought about it, thoroughly brainstormed and analyzed it, the more sense it made. All the technical know-how I had before starting out was about ten html tags I barely remembered from seven-eight years previously. Despite that, I didn’t have any significant problems in acquiring and understanding the required knowledge to create the website you see today - and that’s thanks to modern technology and not my coding intelligence.
I also wanted to get a unique domain name and not myname.com or something similar. Given that I’ve always had an interest and talent for probability calculus and previously discovering that probability can also naturally govern intangible issues as well this came as a natural choice. I want to explore the system and variables inside my mind and reality in order to discover the naturally most optimal way for me to relate to others, learn new information, make decisions and live my life’s purpose.
Additionally, this is an excellent way of improving writing and English skills. Since both reading and writing quite obviously improve and complete each other there’s another aspect I wanted to bring out from within. And that is to find my own true unique voice. If people have their own distinct recognizable verbal voice then why not discover your own writing voice? Also, the more you write the more feedback you get on how to make yourself better understood, which is very essential for both the reader and writer. Then again, English is my third learned language and the impact might not be the best possible, but I know it’s there. Eventually the way I write in English greatly impacts how I speak the language, which at my current location of residence is quite non-existent if it weren’t for what I do besides running this website. More on myself is presented in the last topic.
