Carnival of Improvement 02 February 1, 2007

Posted by The Probabilist in : [Links], Carnivals , trackback

It’s time to get back to basics from yesterday’s rush and present this week’s edition of the Carnival of Improvement. The entries again summed up to 28 articles all worth the read. I was also offered a podcast entry, but I’ve decided to keep this carnival only in the realm of the written word.

The top five entries are again presented in a random order while the rest of the entries are in a somewhat preferred order by category. As usual, I accompanied the links with word counts and my own comments. Enjoy!

Top Five Posts

How to complain and get a good result. (1082) by Paul Michael is an excellent reference when you want to get back at poor service. If you actually want to make a difference, follow these pointers.

Fear Comes Clad In Green Boots (1231) is Rory Sullivan’s very intuitive article on goal setting. I like it when I encounter creatively written articles that get mixed with personal growth like this one.

Star Light, Star Bright, Make this Star do My Bidding Tonight! (1045) by Aaron Potts is a great read on having yourself create the reality you want and not sitting on the sidelines expecting good fortune to roll your way without conscious, diligent and persistent effort.

Beliefs (935) by motivational speaker Craig Harper points out that we have an amazing ability to take on criticism and negativity (emotionally and psychologically) and an even more amazing ability to deflect praise and approval. Why is that?

7 Ways You May Unknowingly Mess Up Your Life (1535) by Patricia takes a stand on core beliefs about your potential that everyone should become aware of and contemplate on. You owe it to yourself to make sure that you haven’t overlooked any of them.

Blog optimizing & monetizing

Violent Acres: The Mother Teresa of Cyberspace (1035) is Jon Swift’s eloquent description and praise over the Violent Acres blog that has reached attention and traffic of incredible proportions. It goes to show that there are numerous styles to write in order to get recognized.

Consciousness & Understanding

Myers-Briggs and Racism (539) is Charles H. Green’s interesting remark on a negative side of the MBTI - stereotyping / categorization gone overboard. I agree that there’s a great deal to be learnt about ourselves and others when exploring the framework, but it’s always healthy to remember that some people (types) want a more idiographic (unique) self-view than a nomothetic (categorized) perspective of themselves.

How to Have Beginner’s Luck (817) by Raymond David Salas is another fine article using modeling to achieve similar results. This time he covers how to attract success in an area completely unfamiliar at first.

DARE! Do not be scared (507) is John Peter’s entry on facing procrastination, seizing opportunities and taking responsible risks when going for the big goals in life - you know, the ones that really mattered when we look back at life.

Someone Saved My Life Tonight (260) by Ray Basile is a brief, yet profound message asking why we resign ourselves to living so miserably rather than becoming what we truly desire to be? What are we afraid of?

Baby Steps to Changing the World (366) is Mallory’s thoughts about making a difference for the good of our planet. If you want to make a big one, start by making several small ones that get attached to your routine behaviour.

Finances & Investing

Stuck In This Housing Market Slump (528) by Silicon Valley Blogger is an article explaining the harsh conditions that apply when you get stuck owning real estate in a down market. It may not offer much help to get out of the trap, but it can save you from falling in it in the first place.

Reduce Junk Mail and Prevent Identity Theft (417) is Matthew Paulson’s piece of advice that you can now apply since the inauguration of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

10 Quick & Easy Ways to Save Money (418) by Barry Mahfood enlists a few small and immediate habitual changes you can focus on to make a significant impact in your savings on the long run.

Create a Simple Spending Plan (498) written by encouraging couch Beth Dargis explains in simple steps how you can take control of your spending habits. Make yourself read and follow it or her words are wasted.

Health & Exercising

Three Things To Do To Snap Out Of Depression. (428) is almomento’s personal advice on how to get rid of a depressive state. I suggest giving it a go since you’ve got nothing to lose.

Labeling IS Disabling…To Us (539) by Wenchypoo counterattacks the thought that you should carefully read the labels of grocery products before making your purchases. Has it become a trend that goes overboard as people lose traditional common sense?

Motivation & Productivity

10 Days to a Better Life (1292) by Erich was a great kick-off to this week’s CoI. He will tell you exactly how to make improvements in your life, how they’ve worked for him personally, what exactly you can use this insight for and what you and others around you will get out of it. It’s definitely a worthwhile read.

Now You Can Write SMART Goals That Work! (1472) presented by Ellesse is an interesting tool for goal achievement that anyone can implement. Read on to find out what it stands for and the whole you will become SMART.

18 Ways to Jump-Start Your Life (1446) by Debra Moorhead outlines several great methods that help you to move in a new life direction. Like Debra, I’m a fan of keeping lists, simply because they work for me.

How to Build Skills Faster (650) is Scott Young’s advice to improve your skill on whatever you focus on, be it internal or external. It all boils down to a simple choice.

The Path of the Rebel (535) is Alan’s wake up call to stop doing what others are simply because it’s the easy road in life. You need to dare a little to get more out of your existence.

How Positive Thinking Works (401) by Jordan Shannon gives us a brief description of why positivism doesn’t stick to our mind-sets very easily. Go check out his new blog.

What To Do When You Quit (722) written by Lyman Reed outlines a step-by-step plan of how to face projects you’ve noticed yourself burying in the past - and bring them back into the daylight again with added usefulness.

Psychology & Relationships

How to Get a Social Life (2203) by Chris delivers a very extensive package of tips and hints to an improved circle of contacts, acquaintances and friends. It’s just another learnable skill that improves through practice.

Empathy, Boundaries, and Getting Dirty (923) by TherapyDoc Linda Freedman gives a description of what it’s like to work in the line of therapy. It might be a burden at times, but it’s bound to flood creativity and wonder into your life as well.

Charm your way to Success (1319) is Arun’s daily remedy on how to ace an interview. Attitude outperforms knowledge as a first impression.

Ask Niels: How do I keep a conversation going? (457) is Niels Hoven’s reply to the question of how to keep a conversation flowing in a easy and relaxed manner for yourself and your discussion partner.
