Polyphasic Sleep, Day 1 January 1, 2007

Posted by The Probabilist in : [News], Sleep , trackback

It’s been slightly over 24 hours since I woke up from my last monophasic sleep. Instead of directly trying to nap every four hours after that, I took 3 naps during the recent 12 hours. On a difficulty scale of 1 to 5, the first day felt like a 2. It’s going to be much harder in the following days and the level of difficulty I base my scale upon is through the experience I had with sleep deprivation during my year in the army.

A five would mean to me a day so tough that it would lead to termination of the experiment. I expect many fours to hit between days 3 and 10 and I’m still feeling very at ease. As I write this I’m feeling as awake and full of energy as during any given noon time in the past. Currently it’s more of a challenge to actually fall asleep during the naps. I didn’t fall asleep at all during the first two naps so I experienced minor pressure on my eyes, but nothing related to clarity of mind or fatigue on the body. The third nap was a success though and either I’m feeling good now because of that, or because the body still relates this time of the day as normal, active daytime.

On a side note, I completed my moving out to a new apartment yesterday so now I have plenty of time to focus on writing again. More than plenty in fact with a polyphasic sleep pattern. ;) I got myself a new computer also, so I won’t be able to electronically update my excel based polyphasic schedule as I go along, since I’m waiting for the release of the 2007 office version. I’ll still report any major changes on this sleep log if I see that there is a need to alter it.

I’ll also publish a similar entry to this one every day at this time for as long as there are significant changes to report. I see the greatest threat being that I will unconsciously remove my earphones or stop the playback of my polynap files that are meant to wake me up. If oversleeping occurs, it’s best to not beat oneself up over it. It’s not a back to zero game when trying to make an eventual successful transitioning.
